Good on ya!

Comment by Dr. Niño Jessielito Doydora on 2008-07-13 23:16:53
Yup. The intention of these blood letting projects is to encourage the students to donate blood at least 3x a year. Since RBC maturation is 3 months, one can donate maximum of 4x a year. Oneof PNRC's program is "Blood Program" where we encourage fellow youths to donate blood. So, we have these 3 blood letting projects for them to voluntarily donate blood 3x a year (Bloodiest Rumble, Sanduguan and Bloodline). During my term as president 1998/99, We only had Bloodiest and Sanduguan. I am happy to hear there is Bloodline. It is indeed difficult to find funds to sustain such projects but I do hope our volunteers would be able to sustain these with ingenuity and initiative with the help of us - the alumni, especially those who can share more to the org. More power to the RCY's!

the first time i volunteered to donate blood, i was turned down because my temperature daw was too high. we had been up almost the whole night before, preparing for the first ever blood letting ng rcy. sa su lobby pa nga ang venue. i had a bottle of beer (given by sponsors), pang-alis ng
"disappointment."

back then, the blood letting was annually held, thus i waited a year to finally donate. sa su pa rin, tulad ng dati. to celebrate, i had a bottle of beer, too!

chubyboy,

Can you pls. tell us more about the first bloodletting activity of rcy. We've been dying to know when it was first held so we can include that in our history. please visit our e-group: Perhaps, you can help us fill some info in our database regarding past presidents of RCY of UPLB. Thanks!

hi siamo and the rest of the guys,

perhaps i am not the best source of the info you need because many things have been obscured by time. i can give you some data (and a lot more question marks, too!) but you'll have to research to verify. here goes...

of course, the first president was sherwin lopez, then ed olifernes. other past presidents were fides delgado, the lopez siblings clinton and katherine, not so sure about leopoldo ubaldo. names of former members i can add are carmela tacujan, astrid delgado, vic malenab, roy soriano, violeta and pamela lopez and perhaps a couple of other sisters. we created strong links to groups like the college-y, alleluia community, vanguards and corps of sponsors, academic orgs in bio, applied math, chem, engg, etc.

we maintained constant communications (despite no emails and cellphones then) with pnrc in sta. cruz under the administrator patrocinio hermosura, who supported us by providing first aid trainors, materials for info drives re blood letting, disaster preparedness, other red cross services. we formed close ties with other rcy units in sta. cruz, paete, or liliw (not so sure), helping them with their herbal gardens and medicinal plants, even gracing a beauty pageant!

what kept us busy? first aid training, bloodletting siyempre, fund-raising projects like newspaper drive and caroling, christmas gift-giving sa tuntungin, publication of a first aid handbook, sponsoring a concert (called "encore!" and featuring louie ocampo and rowena arrieta), sportsfests with other orgs, sponsoring a game contest (rubick's cube, if i correctly recall), community and church services (such as a choir for a wedding!).

break muna...

so sorry, guys, for messing up your events page with a lot of trivia and non-events, but as an rcy member, i was a bit of a non-conformist.

anyway, i recall feeling how "big" our activities were at the start because not everybody was available when needed, and there were really so few of us to take on the assignments. but it helped make us kapal-moks to approach people, for instance, officials or sponsors; we had to find ways, to be madiskarte, to accomplish our tasks; or to be multi-functional, double-body wika nga, as in you already wrote the solicitation letter, ikaw pa rin ang mag-so-solicit.

now don't get me wrong. the rcy wasn't purely work, work, work, and sharing lessened the load considerably. the camaraderie formed between and among members can go a long, long way---perhaps for some, all the way to the altar. at the end of the day, it boils down to how the rcy has changed, improved me and what i can still become.

a few months ago, a female employee fell ill at the office. when the car that would take her to the hospital arrived, she was unable to walk. nobody else was around except me and another female employee, so we made her sit on a chair and easily carried the chair with her to the car. it was a lesson from more than 30 years ago!

hey, it's all part of the "service and the alleviation of human suffering..." routine kaya afterwards, the little difficulties, the minor inconveniences, and the extra efforts and sacrifies that you go through become insignificant; what matters is that you've done your role as an rcyer.

As far as I know, meron ng Bloodiest Rumble during my time as RCY (1998-2001) and Sanduguan is 1 year old palang yata. And there was no Bloodline yet. It's really good to hear that RCY is planning to hold 3 blood letting projects in a year: Bloodiest Rumble, Blood Line and Sanduguan.

rcy's bloody campaign was already in place since about 1976 or 1977, but the name "bloodiest rumble" was coined on the third year we held the bloodletting. many people were very squeamish (eeew!) with the sight of blood and many more were misinformed and therefore reluctant to donate ("ang payat ko nga!" "low blood ako ha!").

to gather more donors, we invited not only individuals but student groups as well. ayun, pitted against each other, nag-rumble yung ilang frats and orgs to have the most number of donors (even non-members, kung tama memory ko). tuloy naging bloodiest rumble.

perhaps doc nino can tell us how "sanduguan" came to be. it happened noong time niya. and pres. tessa can talk about bloodline. pati kaming veterans are interested to know.

hey, guys, why not get the stories from uplb-based alumni, then share them with us all? danny mendoza is very visible in your area, sa agronomy, i think? call up katherine lopez sa irri---she's devcom, she's vanguard, she's rcy through and through. check out prof. ted mendoza; he wasn't a member, but may have served as a junior adviser then. mayroon pang isang retired soils professor frequently seen sa st. therese; he was a senior adviser for several terms. umpisa pa lang iyan.

there's a lot to share here. a bloody lot!
